UPDATE 18/05/18: Authorities stopped the press conference planned for yesterday by Noura’s lawyer. Don’t let them silence and hide what is happening to Noura! Please keep taking action at this critical time.

Content warning: forced marriage, rape, child abuse

19-year-old Noura in Sudan has been sentenced to death for killing a man in self-defence while being raped.

Noura Hussein was just 16 when she was forced to marry. Her father and new husband signed a marriage contract, then when Noura finished high school, she was forced to move into his home.

The first time Noura’s new husband raped her, he got his two brothers and a male cousin to pin her down while he did it. She’d been unwilling to consummate a marriage that she never wanted – so he forced her to.

The next morning, he tried to rape Noura again – but she managed to escape to the kitchen, where she grabbed a knife. In the ensuing scuffle, he sustained fatal knife wounds.

When Noura went straight to her family and told them what had happened, her father turned her into the police and her entire family then disowned her.

The courts are saying Noura is guilty of intentional murder – even though she was defending herself from being raped by a man she was forced to marry when she was just a young teenager.

We need to put as much pressure as possible on Sudan’s Minister of Justice to quash her death sentence.

Please send an urgent email to the Minister of Justice, demanding they overturn Noura’s death sentence.

To the Minister for Justice
His Excellency Idris Ibrahim Jameel

Your Excellency,

I am writing with regard to the case of Noura Hussein Hamad, a 19-year- old who was sentenced to death on 10 May 2018 for killing her rapist husband. Noura is a victim of marital rape and she should not be killed for defending herself.

I am writing to ask the Sudanese government to repeal the death penalty against Noura, and allow her a retrial considering her mitigating circumstances.

Yours sincerely,
