UPDATE: On 8 August it will be 450 days since Hoàng Đức Bình was arrested. To mark this moment in time, we will be closing this petition on 3 August and handing it over to the authorities. Please take action now, share with others, so we can get as many signatures as possible calling for Binh’s release.

After a chemical spill destroyed the environment and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people, environmental activist Hoàng Đức Bình spoke out.

Because of this he’s now behind bars, and could be there for the next 14 years.

Up to 270,000 fisherfolk and their families in Vietnam were left with nothing – thanks to a dodgy steel plant owned by the Taiwanese company Formosa. The factory leaked toxic waste into the waterways, killing the millions of fish people relied on for a living.

The people affected demanded what any of us would – fair compensation, the spill to be cleaned up, and for the company to be held accountable.

But the Vietnamese government has responded to the peaceful protests with force. They’ve detained blogger Bình since May last year, after he live-streamed and critically commented on police brutality and the government. His 14-year sentence is one of the harshest handed down for something like this.

Amnesty supporters have contributed to the release of countless thousands of people unfairly imprisoned, all around the world – including Vietnamese activist, Father Ly. Let’s get freedom for Hoàng Đức Bình too.

Call on the Vietnamese government to release Hoàng Đức Bình now.

Thank you!
