Responding to the human rights abuses suffered by Flotilla activists in Israeli custody, Amnesty International Australia urges the Australia Government, together with other states and Israeli authorities, to ensure justice and accountability for these serious violations.
Eleven Australians were among the 430 peaceful activists and subjected to torture, cruel, degrading and inhumane treatment while being unlawfully detained by Israeli officials.
Lawyers and flotilla activists have documented dozens of participants with suspected broken ribs and resulting difficulty breathing, as well as reports of severe degradation and sexual harassment and humiliation. Reports of physical and sexual abuse are gravely concerning, and Israeli authorities must be held to account.
International accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, must be utilised to bring perpetrators of such abuses to justice. States, including the Australian Government, must ensure these mechanisms are effectively engaged and that accountability is pursued.
Mohamed Duar, Amnesty International Australia’s Occupied Palestinian Territory Spokesperson, says:
“These courageous and brave civilian activists, including eleven Australians, were participating in a peaceful solidarity mission aimed at breaking Israel’s unlawful 19-year blockade of the Gaza Strip and delivering desperately needed humanitarian, medical aid and supplies to two million Palestinians enduring an engineered famine and genocide.
“The cruel, degrading and inhumane treatment of the activists described in these reports reflects the everyday reality faced by Palestinians.”
Mohamed Duar, Amnesty International Australia’s Occupied Palestinian Territory Spokesperson
“The serious human rights abuses perpetrated by Israeli officials against these peaceful activists are enabled and fuelled by a brutal and unlawful military occupation and apartheid regime. The cruel, degrading and inhumane treatment of the activists described in these reports reflects the everyday reality faced by Palestinians.
“To date, over a million Palestinians have been arrested and around 10,000 currently remain detained, including administrative detention without trial or charge.
“The footage showing Ben-Gvir taunting detained solidarity activists is a reminder of the torture and other ill-treatment that Palestinians have endured for decades.
“All Australian activists must return to safety, and justice for their ill-treatment must be served.”
Mohamed Duar
“All perpetrators must be held to account, and governments and authorities must not allow Israeli officials’ brazen violations of international law to be shielded by continued cycles of impunity. All Australian activists must return to safety, and justice for their ill-treatment must be served.”
Background
The Spring 2026 mission set sail on 12 April 2026. Involving more than 70 boats and 3,000 participants from 100 countries, including 17 Australians, it included a dedicated medical fleet of 1,000 healthcare professionals carrying vital supplies to support Gaza’s decimated healthcare system.
The mission sought to deliver assistance to Palestinians enduring Israel’s ongoing genocide and decades of cruel apartheid.
Amnesty International previously documented ill-treatment and abuse of activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla who were detained in October 2025 after the Israeli forces intercepted its vessels, including sleep deprivation, denial of drinking water and medical care.
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all – and we can only do it with your support.
