Why Amnesty needs you

By organising a fundraising event you will be joining our global movement of over 10 million people. Your active contribution will enable us to continue to challenge injustice and fight for human rights — and the added bonus- you will meet new amazing, like-minded people and have life-changing experiences at the same time.

Amnesty International protects and empowers people – from abolishing the death penalty to protecting sexual and reproductive rights, and from combating discrimination to defending refugee rights. We speak out for anyone whose freedom and dignity are under threat. See the life-saving things your money can do.

How to fundraise for Amnesty

Approach friends and family directly to sponsor your efforts, ask your employer to consider dollar matching the funds you raise or suggest a corporate event. If a 42km run sounds like a bit of a stretch, try getting involved in your local fun run, cycle event or swimathon. Most states hold local events where you can walk, jog or run anywhere from 3km-21km (half marathon)  – so you can get fit at the same time!

If you want to fundraise for us but don’t want to deal with the blisters, try a dinner party, a film screening, trivia night, or BBQ with proceeds from the $1 snags going towards protecting human rights. Maybe you’re a creative and talented individual and want to donate a portion of your art sales, or maybe you’re a school and want to donate your casual uniform day money or raise funds at your annual fete.

COVID-19 Pandemic: Amnesty International is dedicated to ensuring that all fundraising efforts are undertaken with respect to any COVID-19 restrictions that may be in place in your local area. If the event or challenge you have planned is no longer able to take place, there’s no need to worry! Some excellent ideas that you can use: A virtual event- such as a quiz night, treadmill challenge or a bake-off, readathon, ask for donations to Amnesty International instead of a birthday gift, kick a bad habit, physical challenge that can be completed at home.

Community Fundraising & Small Business

There are many ways for individuals and small businesses to raise funds for Amnesty International Australia. For adventurous fundraisers, you could take part in a challenge such as a hike, fun run, swimathon or triathlon. You will still organise local and online events to raise funds, but by participating in a challenge, you will give people extra incentive to donate! Raising funds for Amnesty is easy and if you don’t want to break a sweat, you could organise a dinner party, trivia night, film screening, or BBQ, with proceeds going directly towards defending human rights. You could approach friends and family directly to cover the cost of entering the challenge or organising the event. Every dollar raised really does make a difference.

“Amnesty International has given me so much in terms of new friends, skills, opportunities and most importantly inspiration. It has shown me that every small change counts, and that nothing big can be achieved without getting involved.”

Raffaele, Climb Kilimanjaro Team 2, August 2012

Schools

Young people are no longer the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today. School based fundraisers are a powerful way for students to speak on human rights issues facing society today, while also allowing them to actually get involved in fundraising efforts to ameliorate these issues. Fundraising with Amnesty International will allow students to learn about the human rights issue at hand, but also learn how to set SMART goals, inspire school spirit and support student wellbeing. We have seen schools donate their funds from crazy hair day, carnivals, casual dress day, readathons, colour run, movie day and annual school fetes.
