#ProtectProtest Activist Resources

A Message From Our Movement Manager:

“When people speak out and stand up for human rights, they change the world for the better. Women’s voting rights, land rights, marriage equality and the five day working week were all won by people trying to make a difference for themselves, and their communities. Without the right to raise our voices in protest, our world would be a very different place.

The right to protest is a fundamental human right. Yet we are still seeing governments in Australia and across the world crack down on this freedom and implement restrictive and punitive laws. Right now, our right to challenge injustice is under threat from powerful lobby groups and the governments they influence, and we need to act urgently.

We need to protect the right to protest and challenge injustice so we can continue to create change and make the world fair, free, equal and just. To ensure we can push back against these forces, we need to work together with people like you, and encourage as many people as possible to raise their voices.”

Sarah Gooderham, Movement Manager

How We Win

We are powerful together. Our world has been shaped by the power of ordinary people working together, and by joining with thousands of Australians in the fight to #ProtectProtest, we can ensure that the right to protest and our ability to challenge injustice is protected.

Here’s how we win:

What You Can Do

If You Want A Sprint: Upload Selfie

Take the Selfie Pledge to Protect Protest now, by uploading a photo of yourself holding a sign with the hashtag #ProtectProtest. These photos will be displayed as part of the campaign, and will play an important role in keeping attention on the issue.

If You Want A Jog: Ask Others to Upload Selfies

If enough of us raise our voices, decision makers will have to listen. Help make this massive by asking others to take the Selfie Pledge to Protect Protest and upload photos of themselves holding a sign with the hashtag #ProtectProtest.

If You Want A Marathon: Recruit Partner Organisations

To demonstrate the strength of the movement, help build a coalition of groups and organisations in your community who support the right to protest. Here’s how:

  1. Build a community map of your area – who is likely to stand with us to protect protest?
  2. Approach like-minded groups and organisations and ask them to partner with Protect Protest by adding their logo to this page and asking their community members to take the Selfie Pledge to Protect Protest
  3. Host a discussion event with some of your partner organisations. You could do this in the form of a debate, or town-hall style event and invite members of your local council

HOT TIP: Need to brush up on your partnership building and community mapping skills? Check out this module.
Also keep an eye on the Activism Planner for upcoming trainings.

If You Want A Marathon: Become a Human Rights Observer

Human Rights Observers are deployed at protests where there is a significant risk that human rights violations may occur, to reduce the risk by observing interactions between police and protesters.

If you are an existing Amnesty activist, you can express your interest in becoming a Human Rights Observer. If you are not yet an Amnesty activist, you can start your journey by registering for a GetActive here.

If You Want A Sprint: Take Online Action

Each state of Australia has different laws surrounding protest. If any states move to implement restrictive or anti-protest legislation, we will take action to protect the right to protest. Take the Selfie Pledge to Protect Protest to be kept in the loop, and keep an eye out for online actions here.

If You Want A Jog: Call Decision Makers

In addition to taking action online, we can influence decision makers by calling them at critical moments. Take the Selfie Pledge to Protect Protest to be kept in the loop, and keep an eye out for online actions here.

If You Want A Marathon: Meet with Decision Makers

One of the most powerful ways to influence decision makers is to organise a meeting between them and your Amnesty activist group. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this may have to be a virtual meeting.
