Rapid Response: Free Taner Kılıç

Taner Kılıç was just doing his job, exposing human rights abuses in Turkey as Chair of Amnesty International in that country. But on 9 June 2017, he was thrown into prison on the absurd charge of being a member of an “armed terrorist organisation”.

Yesterday, the court ruled that Taner Kılıç would be released, following eight months in jail.

However, just as Taner’s family waited for him to walk out of jail, he was re-arrested. There is no new evidence against him, and treating him and his family in this manner is not only unjust – it is cruel.

Defending human rights is not a crime.

Use this guide and call the Turkish authorities today, and ask them to drop the charges against Taner. Global pressure is being put on Turkish authorities from around the world today!

The Turkish Embassy is open today until 5.30pm.

Step 1: Call the Embassy on this number – (+61) 2 6234 0000

Step 2: Politely ask to speak with Ambassador Ahmet Vakur Gokdenizler. You may not be passed onto him but that’s okay. You can leave a message with a staff member and ask for it to be passed onto the Ambassador.

Step 3: Say you are calling in regards to Taner Kılıç (pronounced Tan-eir Kil-ich) case. Tell them you are very concerned about him being released and then locked up again for simply defending human rights.

Here’s a guide to help your call.

I am calling on Minister of Justice, Abdulhamit Gül and the Ambassador to drop all charges against Taner Kılıç.

Yesterday, the court ruled that Taner Kılıç would be released, following eight months in jail. However, just as Taner’s family waited for him to walk out of jail, he was re-arrested. There is no new evidence against him, and treating him and his family in this manner is not only unjust – it is cruel.

I am urging the you to make sure the court’s order to release Taner at the hearing is respected, and that he is freed immediately.

More than a million people around the world have called for the release of Taner. And we will not stop until he is free.

Can you pass this message onto the Ambassador and Minister of Justice?

Step 4: Politely thank them for their time and then SMS us back with a Y to let us know if you called the Embassy.
