I've been either a supporter, donor, activist or letter-writer with Amnesty for well over 10 years now and came on board a formal role with the ALC in 2021. As Regional President I've worked with a small group of committed individuals to leverage their strengths and interests to work towards the cause we all care so much about. The sustainability of our movement is often top of mind, and so I aim to ensure we don't miss opportunities to bring others on board. I also hope to continue organising and mobilising to support our local refugees and Human Rights Act campaigns while many other causes and communities are supported and not forgotten. I otherwise have a career in fundraising at universities in Australian and New Zealand.

I'm Tamara Kayali Browne and I'm an academic and activist. I work as a Senior Lecturer in Bioethics at Deakin University and as a volunteer with Canberra Palestine and Climate Justice. As both an ethicist and a Palestinian, it should perhaps come as no surprise that I am passionate about advocacy for human rights in Palestine. But I combine that passion with skills in research, analysis and communication - all of which I can contribute to initiatives on the ALC. I especially enjoy work that involves communication skills to raise awareness of a particular issue in the wider community, whether that be through writing opinion pieces in the media, leaflets, social media campaigns etc. My research success also reflects my ability to break down broader goals and work towards them. As I have often done so both as an individual and in collaboration with others, my track record is evidence not only of my organisational skills but also of my ability to work effectively in a team. So far I have participated in the nationwide End the Genocide projections that Amnesty International organised last year, and look forward to taking part in the upcoming Palm Sunday Rally.

I am Sara Abdelmawgoud, an education advisor, researcher and activist. I currently work at La Trobe University. My work with Amnesty focuses on supporting and advocating for communities affected by war, human rights violations and injustice, with a particular emphasis on refugee rights and Palestine. I have led and co-led a number of campaigns, including Hands Off Palestine and 7 Days 7 Actions for Refugee Week. I have also helped organise actions such as the Palm Sunday Rally and Refugee Week community stalls. My activism centres on community outreach and public education, which I put into practice by organising events such as futsal tournaments, Act for Rights informal gatherings, and creating modules for activists to raise awareness about refugee rights. I am also an Amnesty Gaza representative. I collaborate with diverse groups and organisations to coordinate and lead actions. I worked closely with ANU students during their encampments, where we campaigned for the right to protest and freedom of speech. I also support Amnesty campaigns and actions such as Voices for Gaza, public projections, silent vigils, and more. Beyond campaigning, I write opinion pieces for media outlets to share ideas, raise awareness and reach wider audiences and communities. I look forward to educating and mobilising more people in support of our campaigns.

Chelsea Francis is a lawyer and most recently the Director of the Human Rights Legal Group of Western Australia (HRLG WA). Chelsea has been involved in Amnesty International in a leadership capacity since 2016. Previously, she was a Human Rights Observer (HRO) , a GMV for four years, and on the committee of the University of Western Australia branch for four years, including as President in 2017 and 2018. Since relocating from Perth to Canberra this year, she has been involved with the ACT Human Rights Act Committee. Chelsea’s interests have continued to be in the areas of international law, law reform, and public policy. She has served in international humanitarian outreaches in refugee affairs and is passionate about her work in the human rights sector. Additionally, she has been involved in organisations including Teach for Australia, the Aurora Education Foundation, and the WA Youth Parliament. Chelsea has also developed a particular interest in technology law. She wants to see an expansion of Amnesty International’s digital rights initiatives, particularly considering the human rights implications and the importance of such rights in the contemporary digitalised world.

I belong to Amnesty International because I believe in always shining a light and never accepting the darkness. Being a long time Amnesty member has included grass roots groups, ongoing actions and ALC involvement across New South Wales and Victoria. As a Business Analyst with a background in economics and commerce, I bring skills in finance, business strategy, planning, and risk management. I am particularly interested in urgent actions for prisoners of conscience, refugees rights, climate justice, and corporate social responsibility.

How I joined Amnesty: Through local human rights organising on Birpai Country, joining Amnesty in 2024 and establishing the Port Macquarie Group. My interests: Grassroots organising, strengthening regional voices, connecting local action with global human rights issues.

I have decades of social justice campaigning experience, 2.5 years on the AIA national board and experience on the ALCs predecessor, the Branch Committee. I have participated in the AIA Brisbane Schools Conference for the last four years. I nominated the Brisbane Boys College (BBC) Schools Group for the June Fassina Award and they won it. In 2024 I received an Australia Day Achievement Award from Brisbane City Council for voluntary service, especially for my leadership of the Salisbury SHS Art Collection campaign. My campaign resulted in a substantial collection of Australian art being restored and used for educational benefit in a local state high school, after decades in storage. I am active on Twitter and use it as my primary activism tool - with an international focus eg war on Ukraine, genocide in Gaza/West Bank/Lebanon, climate change, Rwanda, free press, coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef. I am connected globally to social justice campaigners including Paul Niland the Founder of Lifeline Ukraine. Paul subsequently was a guest speaker at a BBC event and gave an expert speech on Ukraine. I participate in local marches on social justice and environmental issues.

How I joined Amnesty: I became a member of Amnesty around 15 years ago when I joined my local community group. We were a group that was passionate about advocating for prisoners of conscience and for the rights of refugees. My interests: I’m interested in strengthening human rights advocacy in our region to create positive change and strengthen communities by improving access to rights and increasing social inclusion.

How I joined Amnesty: I found ALC through searching through the Amnesty Australia website and thought that it would such a great place to become an activist. My interests: Community engagement especially with children and youth, policies and understanding politics that help marginalized people's livelihood and empowering communities to make their voices heard.

Professionally, I have a background in customer service and office management, and I have recently returned to study visual arts to use my creativity to spotlight human rights issues — particularly the ongoing apartheid in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. I am deeply passionate about advocacy and regularly participate in urgent action letter-writing. As part of the ALC I seek to actively contribute, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and help drive meaningful change

Member of the Darwin Amnesty Action Group for over 8 years. Convenor for over 5 years. Activism focus in the NT has been on Youth Justice - to end the over incarceration of young people - especially Indigenous youth and address the causes such as housing, DFSV etc which leads to kids coming into contact with the care and youth justice system. We have been involved in refugee protests outside the Darwin APOD and writing letters. We have also been campaigning for NT and Federal Human Rights Acts and International Human Rights - particularly in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Congo and people at risk
