We defend our most fundamental human rights
Amnesty International has grown from seeking the release of political prisoners to upholding all of our human rights. Our work protects and empowers people – from abolishing the death penalty to protecting sexual and reproductive rights, and from combating discrimination to defending refugee rights. We speak out for anyone whose freedom and dignity are under threat.
When human rights are denied, we won’t be silent. We’ll continue to campaign relentlessly – both at home and globally – to give a voice to those who’ve had theirs taken away.
What are human rights?
All human beings are born with equal and inalienable rights and fundamental freedoms. They are based on principles of dignity, equality and mutual respect – regardless of your nationality, your religion or your beliefs.

How we protect human rights
We campaign on a wide range of issues to protect and defend human rights, both within Australia and across the globe.
