As part of last year’s Write for Rights event, Amnesty supporters and activists from around the world united behind ten courageous human rights defenders, including political activist Maryia Kalesnikava who was abducted by the Belarus authorities and sentenced to 11 years in prison on false charges, and the Indigenous land defenders of the Wet’suwet’en Nation, criminalised by Canadian authorities just for protecting their lands.

Just this week, we learned of Maryia’s long-overdue release, and two months ago, the three Wet’suwet’en land defenders – Sleydo’, Shaylynn and Corey – were ordered by a British Columbia Judge to complete community service rather than serve time behind bars.

It’s thanks to the continued support of Amnesty supporters and activists that Maryia, Sleydo’, Shaylynn and Corey were allowed to walk free – but these courageous defenders should never have been arrested in the first place, simply for exercising their rights.

Will you take action to protect all those we’re standing behind in this year’s Write for Rights?

Write for Rights 2025 is already making a difference

Just last month, human rights defender Sonia Dahmani was conditionally released from prison!

While we are relieved to see this progress, Sonia should never have been locked up in the first place.

We must continue to pressure the Tunisian authorities to immediately drop all charges and end the harassment and intimidation against her – take action now.
