UPDATE: Last week, Member for Newtown, Jenny Leong MP, introduced the private member’s Human Rights Bill 2025 (NSW)!
This important legislation would require the NSW government to put human rights at the heart of all decision-making; it would enable people in NSW to challenge human rights abuses, right wrongs, and create a fairer future for everyone.
This was only made possible thanks to the incredible power of the community
- 64 Amnesty activists formed the NSW Human Rights Act Group to champion securing a Human Rights Act.
- Almost 700 Amnesty supporters signed the petition calling on Premier Chris Minns to legislate a Human Rights Act.
- 71 Amnesty activists emailed their NSW MP, calling for human rights protections.
- And multiple dedicated Amnesty activists took time out of their days, picked up the phone and called their MPs directly.
Now, to ensure the Bill becomes law, we must call on Members of Parliament in NSW to support the Bill. Will you take 2 minutes and send an email to your MP to share your support? Our website makes it easy, with a drafted message ready for you to hit send. If you’ve already emailed your MP, thank you. Please consider sharing this action with a friend or family member to help spread the word.
Amnesty joined over 100 organisations advocating for a Human Rights Act in NSW, and when the Bill was introduced, we were thrilled to be standing shoulder to shoulder with these change-makers.
Now, together with our partners, we are calling for an Inquiry into the Bill – the next step in ensuring this becomes a reality for people in NSW.
The next few weeks are critical as the Labor Government decides whether they will support this Inquiry into the Bill.
It’s up to us to show our support, to tell our MPs, and to fight for our human rights.
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all – and we can only do it with your support.
