Stand up for justice
January 26 is a day to stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Each year there is talk of division, yet year after year – rain, hail or heatwave – tens of thousands of Australians come together in a powerful show of solidarity. Young people, seniors, visitors, new citizens and First Nations people take to the streets, and for many, attending has become a family tradition.
The first documented protest on this date was the 1938 Day of Mourning, and Aboriginal people have protested every year since.
Find a rally near you in Gadigal/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne, Meanjin/Brisbane, Boorloo/Perth, or Lutruwita/Hobart and join the march. Attend safely, bring a friend, stay sun safe, and look for our yellow signs to walk with us.

Be Protest Ready!
Demonstrations led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders have had a lasting impact on Indigenous Rights, even amounting to changes to the Constitution after the 1967 referendum. We’re only able to do this work now, because of the Elders who paved the way before us. This blog takes a look at how three historic protests advanced Indigenous rights in Australia.
Before you go, make sure you check out our “How to Stay Safe at a Protest” guide, take note that COVID-19 cases are back on the rise so to take precautions and wear a mask and monitor symptoms.
If you’re unable to join us at the Invasion Day Rally, there are still many ways to get involved:
Social Media Advocacy: Engage in online activism by sharing Indigenous voices and using relevant hashtags. Join discussions to boost awareness and contribute positively to Indigenous rights conversations.
Virtual Learning Events: Attend online events and webinars focused on Indigenous issues. Actively participate, ask questions where appropriate, and share insights to build an informed and engaged online community for Indigenous rights.
Petitions and Letters: Sign and share online petitions to help protect children in detention and support broader Indigenous rights. One urgent action is to call on Australian governments to end torturous practices in youth detention and raise the age of criminal responsibility. Every signature adds strength to the collective call for change and shows decision-makers that Australians expect children’s rights to be respected.
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all – and we can only do it with your support.
