The Albanese government has let rainbow communities down. LGBTIQ+ Australians will be left out of the next Census.
There is a service gap that divides the LGBTIQ+ community and the rest of Australia. The best way to improve health, mental health, education, and other important outcomes is ensuring that our leaders consider the diversity of our community when creating policies that affect our lives.
In 2021, thousands of Amnesty supporters asked Former Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar to include LGBTIQ+ Australians in the census. Despite these calls, he ordered for questions related to sexual orientation and gender identity to be excluded from the 2021 Census.
Shockingly, Anthony Albanese’s government has decided to again, not count LGBTIQ+ Australians in the 2026 census, with officials citing concerns that making the census more complicated could compromise the quality of the survey.
Most LGBT+ Australians will have a horror story about not being able to access health and mental health services, education, and community and social services. We want rainbow kids to grow up without having horror stories of their own.
Politicians need to hear why it is so important that LGBTIQ+ Australians are counted as part of the next Census.
