On Monday 27 July, it was decided that further work needed to be done before governments could make a decision on raising the age.
However, there is still hope. If the government can form and resource a Working Group with a deadline of 6 months to report back, then that’s a big step towards kids not being locked up.
It’s an absolute tragedy that the practice of imprisoning children has been in place for so long. We can’t even begin to imagine how traumatic this has been for both the kids and their families. We can’t allow another year to pass and for more children to be caught up in the quicksand of the justice system.
