Why should children be kept out of adult jails?

The brain of a child is still developing; their needs are different to that of an adult. Imprisoning children in adult jails, and using an adult corrections approach violates their human rights. This is a failure to the Victorian community.

Every other state and territory has moved away from putting adult corrections departments in charge of youth detention. This recognises that all children deserve a chance to rehabilitate and also survive. It is time that Victoria moves in the same direction.

What are we doing about it?

The Community Is Everything Advisory Group will gather in solidarity with these children at the Supreme Court to demonstrate that children do not belong in adult prisons. This is in support of the Human Rights Law Centre’s case against the Victorian Government to get children out of Barwon Adult Prison.
