Amnesty International – the Victorian Activism and Leadership Committee, in partnership with Melbourne Activist Legal Support (MALS), invites you to an online panel discussion about the right to protest, how this right has been limited by Victorian legislation and what you can do to protect the protest!
When people stand up and speak out for human rights, they change the world for the better. Throughout history, protest has been a powerful tool for change. Today, powerful people, in Australia and around the world, are cracking down on our right to protest. It must be protected.
The panel will include a discussion about:
- Victorian Anti-Protest laws including the Sustainable Forests Timber Amendment (Timber Harvesting Safety Zones) Act 2022 which commenced on 20 May 2023.
- Strategic Incapacitation
- how the right to protest is under threat and the way Victoria Police apply this practice to manipulate and intimidate activists and repress the right to protest.
We will be joined by an Auslan interpreter. This session will be recorded.
Join us on Wednesday 14 June at 5:30pm-7pm for an online panel discussion and Q&A.
- hear from activists, legal experts and community organisations including Amnesty, MALS, Police Accountability Project and the Human Rights Law Centre
- learn how police tactics can affect your right to protest
- find out how you can help protect the right to protest
Registration is essential!
