UPDATE 18/08/18: Following protests in Indonesia and a global outcry, the girl was moved from prison to a government monitored safe house. This is progress, however she is struggling with her mental health in the safe house. Please continue to call for her immediate and unconditional release!

Content warning: rape, incest, child abuse

A 15-year-old girl has been locked up in Indonesia for having an abortion after being raped by her brother.

She has been sentenced to six months in prison and her mother is also facing charges for helping her secure the abortion. In Indonesia, abortion is only allowed in very limited circumstances and women who have illegal abortions face up to four years in jail.

Her brother admitted to raping her and threatening to beat her when she refused his advances. He has been sentenced to two years in prison.

None of this is her fault. She has been through something that no one should ever have to experience — she must be supported, not punished.

Child and women’s rights activists in Indonesia have now filed an official complaint against the decision to imprison her.

There is a movement rising to free her. Will you be part of it?

Tell the Indonesian authorities to release her immediately and to decriminalise abortion in all circumstances in Indonesia.

Your Excellency / Mr,

I call on the Indonesian authorities to unconditionally and immediately release a 15-year-old girl who was convicted for obtaining an abortion after having been raped by her brother.

I also call on the Indonesian authorities to decriminalise abortion in all circumstances so that no woman or girl is subject to penalties of any kind for seeking or obtaining an abortion. Please ensure access to safe and legal abortion in cases of rape, sexual assault or incest, when pregnancy poses a risk to the life or health of the pregnant woman or girl, and in cases of severe or fatal fetal impairment.

Yours sincerely,
