Amnesty Redfern Action Group will be holding a free online forum on Wednesday 5 August 2020, 6.30pm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time) to mark the ‘National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day’. In the wake of renewed awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement this forum
will discuss the real and lived consequences of the justice system in Australia.
The current tone of punitive measures that disproportionally impact on First Nations People
was in many ways set by the NT Intervention.
The Royal Commission and Board of Inquiry into the protection and detention of children in the
Northern Territory failed to make clear recommendations on the NT Intervention and to hold responsible
ministers to account.
This has gone hand in hand disempowering Aboriginal communities, Night Patrols and increased
state intervention. Some speakers will look at the impact of the NT Intervention measures in particular,
while others will address general aspects of the justice system and its consequences across the country.
