This lecture is to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba.
Who: Dr Adel Yousif, UTAS Lecturer and Palestinian Tasmanian, will deliver a presentation, including the story of his father’s expulsion from Palestine in the 1948 Nakba.
Adel will be supported by Senator Anne Urquhart (Government Senator for Tasmania) and an unnamed human rights observer** (recently returned from the West Bank).
Why: There is a nationwide series of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba and highlighting the importance for our world today of understanding the Palestinian narrative, voice and suffering. Friends of Palestine seeks to educate the broader public about Palestinian identity, heritage and culture and the urgent need for our country to support Palestinian self-determination and human rights.
Where and when: Sir Raymond Ferrall Theatre, UTAS Newnham Campus, Saturday 13th May, 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm.
The event will be followed by Palestine in the Pub, Gunners Arms Hotel (23 Lawrence St Launceston), where we will hear more about Palestine from Adel.
One year ago, Friends of Palestine in northern Tasmania began at an Amnesty-sponsored vigil in Launceston for the wrongful imprisonment of former aid worker, Muhammad el Halabi. It is hoped we can continue in that spirit of solidarity and concern for human rights and justice highlighted by numerous human rights organisations internationally, among which Amnesty helps lead:
The event will be catered, to help build community, and support a local Afghan Hazara business.
