Daughter of the Lake blends the political and the spiritual, beautifully depicting the humanity at the heart of these land rights cases.

Daughter Of The Lake tells the story of Nelida, an Andean woman who is able to communicate with water spirits who uses her powers to prevent a mining corporation from destroying the body of water she considers to be her mother. With a gold deposit valued at billions of dollars laying just beneath Nelida’s lakes, the film follows Nelida’s story as farmers and Latin America’s biggest gold producer come into conflict.

The first Meaningful Movies NSW screening of 2017, the screening will raise funds and awareness for indigenous Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña’s fight against mining giant Yanacocha.

With the mining company trying to force Máxima off her land, the parallels between Máxima and Nelida’s stories are obvious and we hope that the film with inspire people to get involved with Amnesty International’s campaign to stop Yanacocha.
