Amnesty International Australia is committed to moving towards towards a Human Rights Act where competing human rights can be clearly balanced through a legislative framework.

Australia is the only Western country not to have a national Human Rights Act. So far it’s been up to states and territories to take the responsibility to protect our rights, but only ACT and Victoria have Human Rights Acts in place. The 2018 Tasmanian State Election will mark 10 years since the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute (TLRI) recommended our State should establish a Human Rights Act.

There is currently a campaign to establish this Tasmanian Human Rights Act and Amnesty International Utas will be hosting a speakers panel to discuss why we need a human rights act and how it might help to protect the human rights of Tasmanians.
