Amnesty International Australia NSW Refugee Network will be working with Meaningful Movies to present a screening of Freedom Stories. The documentary follows the stories of former refugees who arrived in Australian waters seeking asylum from the Middle East in early 2001. Locked in remote detention centres and then placed on temporary protection visas, their limbo lasted for years. Now Australian citizens, they are finally building secure lives and contributing to their new country.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with cast member, Amir Javan. Amir currently works as a licensed real estate agent and investment property specialist after fleeing Iran at the age of 27, and spending four and a half years in the Curtin and Baxter Detention Centres. This will be an incredible opportunity for audience members to listen to Amir’s experiences first-hand.

Afterwards, we’ll have a lineup of musicians, poets and artists who are, or were, refugees sharing their experiences through their art.
