Join us in the park on 4 June as we film our completed Refugee Week Community Project!

Over 30 community groups have come together to create a giant, colourful welcome message to show that the Sunshine Coast welcomes refugees, and respects their human rights and dignity.

Come along from 12pm for a sausage sizzle. If you can only attend the filming of the message please arrive at 1pm.

We will be joined by Christine Stuart from Bulu Yabun who will conduct a Welcome to Country. Christine is the author of two Gubbi Gubbi children’s language books.

Refugee Week, 19 – 22 June 2022, is Australia’s peak annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

This is also an opportunity for the Sunshine Coast community to call for Australia’s refugee and Humanitarian intake to be increased, so that we can do our part to assist people fleeing crises such as those in Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.

The 2022 Refugee Week theme is Healing. “Australia and the rest of the world have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hit the reset button on how we behave towards one another. The importance of human connections has been underscored by the pandemic and such lessons can help us in so many ways. Mainstream and refugee communities alike can draw upon shared hardship to heal wounds, to learn from each other and to move forward. Healing can occur through storytelling, through community and also through realisation of our intrinsic interconnectedness as individuals.” – Refugee Council of Australia

SCRAN is a network of community groups on the Sunshine Coast with the shared vision of upholding the human rights of people from refugee backgrounds and people seeking safety in Australia. Our groups are involved in a range of activities to support refugees and people seeking asylum, including direct service support to refugees in the community, and campaigning for the Australian Government to end offshore detention, increase the humanitarian intake, and implement solutions that help more people find a safe place to live.
