On Sunday 9 December the Townsville Action Group will celebrate International Human Rights Day with a gala letter writing event at the Picnic Bay Lifesaving Club.
This is in conjunction with Tide Cafe and their Beachside Brekkys held at the Lifesaving Club.
Supporters will be invited to come along for an hour between 7:00am and 12:00pm to write letters as part of the Write for Rights campaign and enjoy a free coffee. Coffee will be provided by Amnesty International and attendees are welcome to buy breakfast from the cafe.
What is Write for Rights?
For over 15 years Amnesty activists, all around the world, have taken millions of actions to combat injustice during Write for Rights. Write for Rights is about bringing people together to take action. When tens of thousands of Amnesty activists take action; writing letters, signing petitions, and sending solidarity cards, we know that we can create change.

This year, activists all around the world will take action for women persecuted because they spoke out for human rights;
- women imprisoned in Iran for opposing the death penalty,
- attacked with acid in Ukraine for standing up for LGBTQI rights,
- and disability advocates facing discrimination in Kyrgyzstan.
The world would be a poorer place without these women standing up for human rights – so let’s stand with them on Human Rights Day
We have been given the perfect present to celebrate Human Rights Day this year – on 31 October 2018 the Human Rights Bill was introduced into State Parliament. We will have a giant thank you card at our celebration and will invite people to express their thanks to the Queensland Government.
