Amnesty International Gold Coast and Refugee support groups are holding a Candle Light Vigil at Surfers Paradise for the Murugappan family and people on Manus and Nauru. We are demanding that the family will be allowed to return to Biloela and granted permanent residency. The Australian government needs to release all remaining refugees and asylum seekers from detention and accept the New Zealand Offer.

Please join us at the beach-side of the Surfer’s Paradise sign at the Esplanade, opposite McDonalds to support Tharni and the healthcare workers caring for her at Perth Children’s Hospital.

We acknowledge that this event is being held on the lands of the Yugambeh people, and pay respect to elders past and present. Freedom for asylum seekers and refugees is wound up in the ongoing struggle of the Aboriginal people of this land. This was, is, and always will be Aboriginal land.

This will be a COVID-safe event, please check in and respect social distancing guidelines.

Access: limited metered street parking, Paradise Mall parking from Hanlan Street (Gold Coast Highway), Bruce Bishop Carpark on Beach Road, or park at Broadbeach and catch the tram to Cavill Avenue.
